Swiss private banking: account opening and wealth onboarding

Swiss private banking starts with a provable wealth story, transparent ownership and a bank whose actual client policy fits the case — not with a generic application form.

01

The client profile defines the bank universe

Nationality and residence, business countries, asset size and composition, account purpose, investment mandate, projected transactions and connected persons are tested against each bank's risk appetite. Minimum relationship size and accepted countries vary, so sending one file indiscriminately can damage the profile.

02

Source of wealth is a narrative, not a single certificate

The bank needs to understand how the fortune arose and how the particular funds reached the account. Company accounts, sale documents, dividends, inheritance, investment income and tax returns are joined into a chronology supported by bank statements and tax evidence.

03

Personal, corporate and structure accounts serve different purposes

A personal investment account, operating-company account, holding account and trust or foundation account have different documentation and controls. A structure discloses the settlor, founder, protector, trustees, council, beneficiaries, UBOs and authorised persons, together with its legal and tax rationale.

04

Custody and the investment mandate need a separate decision

Currency, custody, execution-only, advisory or discretionary management, portfolio lending, fees, product restrictions and market access are agreed before onboarding. The account wrapper does not replace investment-risk and suitability analysis.

05

The profile must remain current after opening

A move of residence, business sale, major receipt, new beneficiary, control change or unusual transaction may require advance explanation and a file update. CRS, sanctions, tax duties and home-country restrictions remain relevant throughout the relationship.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can account opening be guaranteed?

No. The bank makes its own decision after reviewing the client, structure and projected activity.

Is a visit to Switzerland mandatory?

It depends on the bank and case; remote identification is not always available and does not reduce due diligence.

Can a trust or foundation open an account?

Yes, where the bank accepts the structure and receives a complete legal, tax, control and source-of-wealth file.
